2021 Strategic Plan Updates

Video Updates

In August of 2019, the NNECOS Board of Directors began a strategic planning process to allow us to plan a future built upon our longstanding success. Our 2019 review and synthesis of key stakeholder interviews and a NNECOS membership survey surfaced expectations and framed the strategic issues we needed to address. Then, in early January 2020, the Board engaged in a weekend-long workshop to imagine NNECOS’s future and set compelling – but realistic – organizational priorities for the next few years.

In August of 2020, after a year-long process of collaborative work, the NNECOS Board of Directors approved the Society’s first strategic plan. The board is thrilled with the goals we have set forth for the coming years and the promise they hold for our ability to provide value to the oncology community in northern New England.

Armed with this clarity we were ready to re-describe NNECOS’s Vision, Mission and Values. Our Vision is important because it describes the future we ultimately hope to see.

That all patients with cancer and blood disorders in Northern New England will have timely, affordable, and easy access to expert care, as well as the financial, social, and spiritual resources they need to combat their disease.

Our Mission is the statement that helps us express our unique purpose and role in working to achieve that Vision.

The mission of NNECOS is to promote the highest quality care for patients with cancer and blood disorders in our region through professional networking, education, and scientific research, as well as patient advocacy and public policy.

And our Values describe how we intend to behave in doing our work.

  • Guided by the highest ethical standards
  • Acting to maximize the benefit to our community
  • Committing to high-value care
  • Fostering scientific rigor
  • Facilitating collaboration and collegiality
  • Innovation

With our shared purpose firmly in mind, the Board outlined a set of priorities to guide our actions over the next few years, allowing us to stay focused on our intentions while remaining flexible enough to adjust to unexpected opportunities and events:

  • Continue to enhance our value to the oncology community in northern New England
  • Maintain a portfolio of programs and services that are both scientifically excellent and readily accessible
  • Build and support the organizational infrastructure to ensure NNECOS’ future

2021 Strategic Plan Updates

April 2021

The Board continued to make great progress with the strategic plan. During the first quarter of 2021 the focus was primarily on implementing some best practices that will improve the ongoing functioning and effectiveness of the NNECOS Board.

The introduction of both term limits and an Honorary Council will help ensure the Board continues to benefit from new talent and fresh perspectives.

In addition, plans are underway to pilot new ways of engaging NNECOS members who have yet to take full advantage of the wealth of programs and resources their membership provides.

March 2021

The Cancer Community Support Committee launched the Emergency-Need Grant Program and the Grocery/Gas Card Program. These philanthropic initiatives target emergency patient support in alignment with our vision that all patients with cancer and blood disorders in Northern New England will have timely, affordable, and easy access to expert care, as well as the financial, social, and spiritual resources they need to combat their disease.

February 2021

The Strategic Plan task force continued work related to finance, governance and structure, programs and services, and relationships.

January 2021

At the annual board retreat, the NNECOS Board of Directors reexamined strategic priorities and realigned goals and expectations for the year ahead and defined a few high-value initiatives that can help the cancer community and can be achieved during the pandemic.
